Wooden Wedges for Axe Handles fixes axe and adze heads firmly onto their handles. Also suitable for other tools such as hammers.
Wooden Wedges for Axe Handles are made from seasoned hardwood. Currently oak but species may vary (as price of oak is starting to get a little crazy!). Please note, these axe wedges are a little more 'refined' than you might see elsewhere; we don't just whizz them on a bandsaw, they're all sanded, chamfered and ready to be fitted to your axe. Axes come with all sorts of eye size dimensions, so if you're between sizes please purchase the larger wedge and please be prepared to sand your wedge down further for a perfect fit.
Four sizes available (please select from the drop-down box above):
- Small: approximate dimensions: 45mm x 45mm x 8mm - Typically used for hatchets and smaller axes.
- Medium: approximate dimensions: 65mm x 65mm x 8mm - Typically used for small felling axes etc.
- Large: approximate dimensions: 75mm x 75mm x 10mm - Typically used for large splitting axes and felling axes.
- Extra Large: approximate dimensions: 95mm x 75mm x 10mm - Typically used for larger felling axes.
Instruction for fitting:
- Produce a saw kerf in the top of the handle approximately 3/4 of the depth of the axe or adze eye. An ordinary panel saw will normally produce a kerf of about the right size.
- Fit the handle into the eye of the axe or adze head, this should be proud by about 5-7mm.
- At this stage you may need to adjust the size of the wedge to make it fit the length of the kerf.
- Apply wood glue to the kerf and wedge, then with an engineers hammer drive the wooden wedge into the sawn kerf until it will go no further, trim any excess wedge flush with the top of the handle.
- The handle should protrude approximately 5-7mm (1/4") beyond the eye of the axe head.
It is usual to also fit a second wedge (although not strictly traditional) made of steel at an angle between 45-90 degrees to the wooden wedge. This should produce a handle that will be secure for many years.
