The Woodsmith Wood Tar Kiln is a steel kiln whose main purpose is to extract usable wood tar. Also produces a little charcoal as a bi-product.

Once the tar extraction process is complete, a small quantity of charcoal is produced as a bi-product which is usable on your barbecue.

We obtain about 750ml of wood tar and 6 kg of charcoal per burn when using old Norwegian pine roots. Using UK material you may not produce quite as much.

Consists of the following components:

• 450mm (17 3/4") dia. 3mm thick steel ring fully welded to an inverted cone with rim to contain the external heat source
• Removable square section steel legs x3
• Heavy steel lid 5mm thick with two handles
• Drain pipe to collect wood tar into a container (not supplied)

The most productive sources of wood tar are old pine roots or birch bark.

The complete process takes about 5 hours and can normally be opened the following morning to extract the charcoal.

The Woodsmith Wood Tar Kiln is best handled by two people and with care as it is quite heavy. It should fit into most estate cars, vans or pick-ups.
