The
Woodsmith Log Dog is an essential traditional timber framer's tool, used to hold a log in position while it is hewn with an axe from a raw round log into a square timber. The log dog features a parallel end which is driven into the support beam and a perpendicular end which is embedded into the log to be hewn.
We have worked in collaboration with a local blacksmith in the North East to create these hand-forged log dogs from high quality mild steel. We've gone through several rounds of prototypes and testing - and really excited to have these log dogs available for sale.
Please note that these log dogs are crafted from mild steel, chosen for its malleability and safety over hardened steel. While mild steel may deform under heavy hammering, especially with a metal hammer, it can be easily reshaped on an anvil. This choice avoids the risk of shattering under repeated strain, which can occur with hardened steel.
