Experience Traditional Woodworking with the Woodsmith Dumbhead Shave Horse
Please Note: This is a Made-to-Order Device with an Estimated Lead Time of Approximately 3-4 Months.
The Woodsmith Dumbhead Shave Horse is a traditional device designed to securely hold rough billets for precision shaving using a drawknife or spoke shave. This essential apparatus proves essential, especially when working on longer pieces like cleft gate rails and heads.
Handcrafted primarily from sawn oak, but can vary or be in combination with whatever materials are available to me at the time, the shave horse boasts a robust and enduring construction with a convenient quick-release mechanism. Dimensions will vary depending on the materials available, however as a guide the body will usually span between 4.5-5ft in length and 7-8inches in width, supported by four sturdy legs for unwavering stability.
What distinguishes this shave horse is its distinctive design featuring a central arm extending through the body and a top-mounted ramp crowned by a weighty dumbhead. Each piece is hand-crafted to order by Woodsmith of over 30 years, Maurice Pyle.
Due to the skyrocketing cost of materials (namely, oak!), plus labour to make one of these devices (4-5 days), we have had to recently increase the price. If you are looking for a more price friendly option we recommend you look at the Woodsmith English Rustic Shavehorse.
