Hand-crafted by the renowned Swedish toolmakers, S. Djarv Hantverk AB, the Svante Djarv Spoon Knife - Big (also known as hook, or crook knife) is tailor-made for ambitious spoon carvers. Its extra-large blade is perfect for larger spoons such as ladles or serving spoons, and great for finishing the sides of kuksa or shrink pots.
Key Features:
- Blade Design: The flatter curvature, compared to the standard spoon knife, allows for smoother surface finishes despite its heftier feel during carving.
- Handle Lengths:
- STANDARD: 110mm (4 1/4"), with a total length of 165mm (6 1/2").
- LONG: 220mm (8 3/4"), with a total length of 275mm (10 3/4").
- Right vs. Left Grind:
- Right Spoon Knife: For right-handed users, it carves towards you.
- Left Spoon Knife: For right-handed users, it carves away from you.
For left-handed users, the functionalities reverse. Owning both types ensures versatility, especially when trying to avoid carving against wood fibres.
- Bevel Detail: Single external bevel, flat ground to around 25 degrees. The polishing process might introduce a slight convexity.
- Handle Material: Ribbed Swedish elm, ensuring comfort during prolonged use.
- Sharpness: Delivered sharp, but a final hone can optimise its performance.
Expert Tip: Master the use of your non-dominant hand when carving. For instance, if you carve with the right hand, leverage your left thumb to enhance control and strength.
About the Maker - Svante Djarv Hantverk AB:
Svante Djarv Hantverk is a family business based in Avesta, Sweden, that specialises in creating hand-forged wood carving tools. Drawing inspiration from the Swedish metal-working tradition, they've built a broad range of tools, often in collaboration with experienced woodsmiths and craftspeople. Each year, they produce about 4,000 tools and knives, ranging from carving knives to axes, and they also have a unique tool line for children. Every tool is delivered ready for use, crafted from high-quality steel and complemented with handles made from Swedish hardwoods like elm and ash. Woodsmith has had a long-standing relationship with Svante and Elsa Djarv for over a decade, and we're proud to be the UK's largest stockist of their tools.
