The Svante Djärv Hollow Spoon Knife is ideal for carving concave shapes like spoons, bowls, kuksa/ guksi, ladles, and even the inside of shrink pots. One of Svante's latest additions to his tool collection, we were very delighted to work with Svante and Elsa in the development of these knives.
The concave inner blade shape helps reduce resistance while cutting, making carving easier and chip removal smoother. For many people, especially beginners, hollow ground spoon knives tend to be easier to sharpen (although in our opinion never an excuse to not learn how to sharpen outside bevels too!).
This tool is made to handle carving jobs efficiently. Right- and left-handed options let you switch directions as needed, making it easier to work with tricky grain patterns.
12 variants to choose from:
- Three Blade Styles:
- Open (14×65 mm): Best for carving shallower shapes like spoons and ladles.
- Rounded (14×60 mm): A balanced curve for medium-depth carving.
- Compound (14×55 mm): A tighter curve, great for deeper or more detailed hollows. This is a very similar curve to the Svante Djarv Big Spoon Knife.
- Right- and Left-Handed Options:
- Right-Handed Knife: Works towards you when held in the right hand.
- Left-Handed Knife: Works away from you when held in the right hand, or towards you with the left hand.
- Most carvers find both options useful for working with or against the grain, but to start with, finding a grind that correlates to your handedness, is usually the most useful (e.g. right hand grind for right handed user).
- Handle Options:
- Standard Handle: Suitable for general carving.
- Long Handle: Provides extra leverage for tougher wood or when work piece is clamped, lets you work above much easier.
Measurements:
- Blade width near handle: 14 mm
- Blade opening (diagonal across the edge):
- Open: 65 mm
- Rounded: 60 mm
- Compound: 55 mm
