Caulked Billhook Handle
This replacement Caulked Billhook Handle by Ray Iles is the ideal choice for refurbishing older single-edged English billhooks. Made in the UK by Ray Iles, this handle is designed to rehandle or refurbish your well-loved tool, ensuring it's ready for many more years of service.
Constructed from Ash or Beech, known for their strong grain and durability, the handle is robust and ready to withstand the rigours of regular use. It features a smartly tapered steel ferrule for a secure blade connection, guaranteeing stability and safety during use.
With a length of 150mm (6 inches) and an oval cross section along its length, it's ergonomically sized to offer comfort and control. A 6mm pre-drilled hole is incorporated to facilitate a straightforward fitting process, accommodating the tang with ease. A washer is provided to ensure the tang is peened effectively, locking the blade in place. To maintain the handle's condition and extend its lifespan, it is advisable to treat it with Boiled Linseed Oil. This not only fortifies the wood against the elements but also brings out its natural texture and colour.

Specialising in 'no-nonsense' tools, British toolmaker Ray Iles is an stalwart amongst the green woodworking community, producing well-made and affordable tools that with proper care will last a lifetime. Ray Iles is the eldest son of Ashley Iles (of edge tools fame). Both Ashley Iles and Ray were trained in the individual trades of toolmaking (forging, grinding, handle making, etc.) by the little mesters of Sheffield in the 1950’s. Secrets that had been jealously guarded for generations were freely passed on to prevent them from being lost forever.
The Ashley Iles family and business moved to Lincolnshire where they have perpetuated toolmaking in the old tradition ever since. Ray set up his own business about 30 years ago and now produces a range of exceptional green woodworking tools. His tools perfectly compliment the carving and turning tools produced by his brother Tony at Ashley Iles (Edge Tools)
We carry a wide selection of commonly used greenwood tools produced by Ray Iles at Woodsmith; please note most tools come with a factory grind and will need a final hone before use.
