Morris of Dunsford (Edge Tools) ceased production of their billhooks and other edge tools during the summer of 2022 and are no longer available.
When in production, these hand forged billhooks were not perfect by any means, but due to the quality of the steel used and the specification of the blade, they worked better than almost anything else on the market.
Currently, we only have one example available for sale. It is in a new and unused condition with a Woodsmith leather sheath. It is sharp, and ready to use.
Morris DEVON Billhook is a lighter billhook perfectly suited for the harvesting of coppice rods and working it up.
Includes a 'ready to use' WOODSMITH sharpened edge and a custom leather sheath.
One defining feature of a Morris DEVON Billhook is the curious blunted lug on the blade near the ferrule. Our understanding is that this used to accommodate a knotted leather loop. This loop would hang from the wrist and take some of the strain out of holding a billhook for extended periods of time. We have never tried this and do not know of anyone who has, it's just the pattern. This blunted lug also makes it less likely that you cut yourself on the corner of the cutting edge next to the ferrule.
A Devon has a blunted tip on the blade, this makes it stronger and less vulnerable to damage when cutting close to the ground.
Like all Morris billhooks the cutting bevels are long without significant shoulders and ground to about 20 degrees. The tang runs the full length of the handle.
The caulked oval handle, made of varnished ash, is 140mm (5 1/2") long, the blade is approx. 230mm (9" long).
In our opinion these forged hand-made Morris Billhooks are far better than anything else on the market.
A down-to-earth tool designed for professional use and long life.
