MTC spokeshave bodies are made from a single piece of investment-cast steel for accuracy and durability. The precise casting ensures a consistent mouth opening, and enables user-friendly details such as a central boss to keep the blade centred. And the durability of steel means a workshop mishap is far less likely to end in tears.
Twin blade adjustment knobs mean one thing – easy setup. No more tappy tappy trying to adjust your spokeshave blade! The MTC spokeshave twin adjustment knobs means setting up the blade properly is an easy and predictable task both the depth of cut and skew. Add an extra thick 3.2mm bevel down blade, and you have a chatter free ensemble capable of cutting in all directions.
MTC has chosen M2 High Speed Steel (HSS) for the blades. M2 HSS has high abrasion resistance which means it will hold a sharp edge much longer than many other steels. This also means that it may take a little longer to bring up an edge. Don’t worry, you will be leaving your sharpening gear on the shelf for a lot longer too. MTC plane blades are also thicker than the average plane, this eliminates vibration in the cut, ensuring a smooth uniform finish.

Melbourne Tool Company was born from years of collaboration with woodworkers and designers, creating hand tools that blend inspiration from the past with modern functionality. Designed to excel in challenging Australian timbers as well as European and American hardwoods, MTC tools are crafted to be simple, intuitive, and accessible. Developed by experienced woodworkers and rigorously tested, these tools prioritise performance and quality, ensuring woodworking is both effective and enjoyable. MTC tools deliver exceptional value and reliability, making them a trusted choice for woodworkers worldwide.
At Woodsmith, we've taken our time to select planes, spokeshaves, and other MTC tools for our range. As primarily green woodworkers, planes haven’t historically been a major focus for us outside of Maurice's collection of pre-war Stanleys. However, with Izzy’s recent foray into chair-making, the need for quality planes arose - and the search revealed a noticeable gap in the quality vs affordability space.
That’s when we discovered MTC. For the price, we think their tools are exceptional. While you can spend a fortune on planes (and we’re probably not the place to come for £1k-plus options), we only stock tools we trust and know do the job well. MTC tools fit that bill perfectly.
