The Art of Joinery by Joseph Moxon was the first book from Lost Art Press and they have decided not to reprint so when this book has gone, its gone!
The style of the physical book is, like all Lost Press publications, high quality and old school. Hardback with a hand stitched spine and printed on what appears to be handmade, hand-cut paper.
2nd revised edition of Joseph Moxon's "The Art of Joinery", one of the earliest texts available to the general public written on woodworking, dating back to around the late 1600's.
Here is what publisher Christopher Schwarz has to say about this fabulous 2nd revised edition of Joseph Moxon's
"The Art of Joinery", one of the earliest texts available to the general public written on woodworking, dating back to around the late 1600's.
"It's actually one part of a compilation of articles written by Moxon starting in 1678, and compiled into book form later, which was titled "The Mechanik Exercises or the Doctrine of Handy-Works".
It's significance is really in it's age - it is such an early example of the methods used by woodworkers, that its study is at least somewhat warranted just for that fact alone".
I have added modern commentary on every one of Moxon’s sections on tools and techniques. I've amplified the text with photos that demonstrate many of the processes that Moxon discusses, such as processing stock by hand and cutting mortise-and-tenon joints. I explain the historical context behind many of Moxon’s explanations, sometimes supporting his conclusions; sometimes taking issue with them. In this revised edition, I have expanded some of my commentary and revised some assessments based on new information.
Moxon's original text was rife with technical and grammatical errors (probably fine for the late 1600's). So Christopher Schwarz has skilfully inserted black and white photographs to better illustrate traditional woodworking tools and techniques. It sounds like a crazy and disrespectful proposition but ….. it works!
If you are interested in going back to woodworking basics then this will be a must have book.
