The
Joseph Marples Cabinet Screwdriver 11" is a sturdy traditionally made Sheffield screwdriver, hand forged for strength.
Freehand ground and fitted with a traditional oval section beech handle that fills the hand reducing fatigue and providing plenty of torque.
The blades of these screwdrivers are ground freehand from a forged blank, the work is done by eye, without the aid of jigs or fixtures.
Critical surfaces like the parallelism and spacing of the two faces of the tip are reproduced with consistent and remarkable accuracy.
Non-critical elements like the collinearity of the tip and tang are not (in fact it is often possible to work out whether the grinder was left or right-handed).
These slight inconsistencies give each tool a unique and distinctly handmade character.
This is exactly the same way that these tools would have been made over 100 years ago, efficient hand production with no measurement, relying on human skill and practice.
Hand grinding is one of many endangered crafts being kept alive by an increasingly small number of people in Sheffield.
