Hans Karlsson Carving Axe
The Hans Karlsson Carving Axe, also referred to as the Slöjd Axe, is a masterfully hand-crafted tool by the world renowned Swedish forge, Hans Karlsson Klensmide AB. This axe boasts a symmetrical grind with flat bevels at around 30 degrees along its 100mm (4") bit, enabling remarkable precision and control for carving tasks. With a moderate weight of 700 grams (1.6lbs) and a handle that follows the ergonomic design principles of Wille Sundqvist, it ensures a comfortable grip for extended use.
This axe features a high-quality SS1672 alloy steel head, tempered in water to reach a hardness of around 55 Rockwell, guaranteeing durability and a consistently sharp edge. The unique beard design not only enhances the tool's aesthetics but also allows for close-up work, enabling the carver's fingers to get behind the cutting edge for detailed tasks. Each axe is paired with a handle of either Swedish Elm or Ash, lightly oiled to preserve the wood's natural charm, and secured firmly with a single wooden wedge.
Accompanying each axe is a range of sheath options: choose between a standard riveted brown split leather sheath or upgrade to a hand-stitched, 3.5mm thick saddle leather sheath crafted by Woodsmith’s own leather specialist. Please note, due to the exceptional rarity of the Hans Karlsson Carving Axe, purchases are limited to one per person to ensure all our customers have the chance to experience this exceptional carving axe.

Despite a higher upfront cost, the durability and performance of their tools provide excellent value, making them a wise choice even in challenging economic times.
Like us, Hans Karlsson operates as a family-run business, they prioritise quality over quantity, ensuring each tool meets their exacting standards. This commitment has generated immense demand worldwide. The workshop, located in Motala and formerly a butcher's factory, now features forges, a handle-making shop, a fully-equipped machine shop, and a "fitting room" showcasing their 800-tool range.
At Woodsmith, we echo the Karlsson’s belief in tools that deliver exceptional performance and joy over many years. Due to the handmade nature and limited production, Hans Karlsson tools are in high demand, with shipments arriving only every 9-12 months, leading to periods of stock unavailability.
