The Hans Karlsson Spoon Knife (available in right and left grinds) is an exceptional hand-made tool from Swedish makers Hans Karlsson Klensmide AB. Rarely available, and renowned by woodworkers around the globe, these spoon knives are prized for their exceptional quality and precision, offering an unparalleled carving experience. Designed to excel in carving the bowls of spoons or any other small hollow features, the versatility and durability of this tool is outstanding.
When choosing spoon (or crook) knives, having both a right and left ground version is very useful. When carving the bowl of a spoon this allows you to cut from both sides and cut with the grain, leaving a smoother surface. If you are right-handed, a right ground spoon knife is used to make cuts towards yourself. A left ground knife has the cutting edge on the opposite side and used with a pushing cut. Vice versa if you are left-handed. If purchasing your first spoon knife, we would suggest that you buy the grind that cuts towards you first e.g., if you are right-handed, choose a right-handed spoon knife and vice versa if you are left-handed. However, any serious spoon carver will tell you that (eventually) having both is a must!
Used primarily to carve the bowl of spoons but will deal with any small hollow feature. Because of its slightly longer handle this spoon knife is particularly good to reach further into the inside wall of shrink boxes (also known as
krympburk). A beautiful tool that will be a joy to use for a lifetime!
