Hans Karlsson HD Carving Gouge 35-30 Straight is made by renowned Swedish woodworking tool makers Hans Karlsson Klensmide AB.
A robust double-hooped handle on this 35-30 blade makes it suitable for striking with a mallet. Double-hooped means there is a brass ferrule at each end of the handle.
The relatively short edge and medium sweep of this straight gouge makes it a good tool for roughing-out wood in smaller spaces or in smaller quantities. Typically used to hollow small-medium size bowls.
Hans Karlsson has his own reference system to describe the sweep (curvature) of a tools edge. In this case, 35 is the curve of a circle designated by the diameter measured in millimeters, and 30 is the length of the cutting edge in millimeters from corner to corner.
Further down into the bowl use a bent gouge such as the Hans Karlsson HD Carving Gouge 35-30 BENT. This helps to create a smooth transition from side wall to bottom of the bowl.
The blade is made from high quality ball bearing steel (SS2258) so will take and hold a great edge. Hardened in oil to 60 - 62 Rockwell.
Total length 305mm (12") including a 175mm (7") handle.
The lightly oiled handle is made from locally grown Swedish ash or elm. Shaped for comfort in the hand.
There is a shock/sound absorbing nylon insert incorporated into the end of the handle.
Hans Karlsson HD Carving Gouge 35-30 Straight is a beautiful tool extremely well finished. Comes sharpened and honed ready to use.
If looked after, a tool for life.
