Large doubly curved adze from renowned Swedish axe makers Gransfors Bruk.
Described by Gransfors Bruk as an ancient replica but be under no illusion this is a serious tool, capable of some real graft.
Originally designed to carve out wooden gutters (some fantastic examples on buildings at Maihaugen Museum, Lillehamer, Norway) and other hollowing-out work.
Its main use today tends to be to for the hollowing out of large wooden bowls, large sculptural works and chair seats.
The cutting edge from corner to corner is 90mm (3 1/2″) long with a large sweep, from cutting edge to poll is 210mm (8 1/4″).
The single external bevel is ground to about 30 degrees and relatively straight forward to sharpen. Use a hard slipstone to remove the burr from inside of cutting edge.
The gently curved American hickory handle is 635m (25″) long. Weight including handle is 1.8kgs (2.5lbs).
