Note: These unique handles weren't available in the last few years. However, Gränsfors is making progress towards their reintroduction. This means the full carving axe range with carved beech handles may soon be back in stock. We're hopeful and keeping our fingers crossed!
The Gränsfors Bruk Large Carving Hatchet is a lighter weight axe that will find many uses in green woodworking, particularly spoon carving. It has the same head as the Gränsfors Bruk Wildlife Hatchet and Hand Hatchet but with the addition of an exquisite hand carved handle in Swedish red beech. The carved handle improves balance, grip and control and therefore its usefulness as an axe for craft work.
Available in three different grinds (please select from the drop-down box above):
- Double-sided Ground with equal bevels, suitable for right and left handed users. Equal bevels makes this the most generally useful axe. Especially when removing wood from slightly concave features, such as spoon blanks. Will more willingly go where you want it to go compared to Right or Left Ground Axes. For most people, equal bevels, a relatively thin bit and lighter weight will make this a good axe for smaller projects. And for people who find the Gränsfors Bruk Large Carving Axe too heavy.
- Right Ground is a handed axe suitable only for right-handed users. Asymmetric bevels, short on the right, long on the left. Right Ground axes work in a slightly different way, they cut at a lower angle, 'biting' readily and work on straight or convex surfaces. They don't come well out of concave shapes. Preparing smaller billets ready for the pole lathe and shaping the outside of smaller bowl blanks is work the Large Carving Hatchet, right grind will excel at.
- Left Ground suitable only for left-handed users, this axe functions as the mirror counterpart of the Right Ground.
