Gränsfors Bruk Large Carving Axe - Carved Handle
Note: These unique handles weren't available in 2023. However, Gränsfors is making progress towards their reintroduction. This means the full carving axe range with carved beech handles may soon be back in stock. We're hopeful and keeping our fingers crossed!
The Gränsfors Bruk Large Carving Axe - Carved Handle is designed specially for green woodworking and shaping wood. The axe has been developed in collaboration with master craftsmen Wille Sundqvist and Onni Linnanheimo, with inspiration from old designs. The axe boasts a long, curved cutting edge that extends above the head's eye, facilitating efficient slicing cuts. The hand-carved handle enhances grip, balance, and control. Its pronounced beard design allows for close-up, precision work by positioning your hand directly behind the bit.
The Large Carving Axe is double-sided ground as standard. The axe is also available with the edge ground specifically for right-handed or left-handed carving (select from the drop-down box above):
- Double-sided Ground with equal bevels, suitable for both right and left handed users. Equal bevels makes this the most generally useful axe especially when removing wood from slightly concave features, such as spoon blanks. Will more willingly go where you want it to go compared to the Right or Left Ground Axes. For most people, equal bevels, a relatively thin bit and medium weight will make this a safe choice.
- Right Ground is a handed axe suitable only for right-handed users. Asymmetric bevels, short on the right, long on the left. Right Ground axes work in a slightly different way, they cut at a lower angle, 'biting' readily and work on straight or convex surfaces. They don't come out of concave shapes. Right Ground axes excel at preparing billets ready for the pole lathe and shaping the outside of bowl blanks.
- Left Ground is a handed axe suitable only for left-handed users. Asymmetric bevels, short on the left, long on the right. Left Ground axes work in a slightly different way, they cut at a lower angle, 'biting' readily and work on straight or convex surfaces. They don't come out of concave shapes. Left Ground axes excel at preparing billets ready for the pole lathe and shaping the outside of bowl blanks.

For more than 100 years, Gränsfors Bruk AB has built a business upon handcrafted axes and axe expertise, with a focus on quality and environmental responsibility. When it comes to the quality and feel of the axes, this is reflected in the experience and skill of the individual craftsman. Each axe is signed with the smith’s initials as a guarantee of quality.
The company is located in the Swedish village of Gränsfors in northern Hälsingland. The forge sits at the heart of the village and you can hear the rhythmic pounding as you approach, a sound we always take pleasure from when we visit!
We are lucky to be one of the few retailers of Gränsfors Bruk axes in the UK, which has been based on a long standing relationship between our small family business and their forge. We like to think that our close ties to the forge and the alignment in ethos between our two companies make us a knowledgeable, premium purveyor of their world class tools. If you have any questions at all in any product in the Gränsfors range - please reach out to our friendly team and we'll be more than happy to help.
