This Heavy Duty Awl is a traditional tool with a cylindrical blade tapered to a fine point to allow quick penetration into wood.

Ideal to start the location of the metal centres on your pole lathe billet, but also a very useful tool to ream out and enlarge holes in other contexts such as leatherwork. Also a quick and simple method for pre-drilling starter holes for screws.

Increasingly rare, the handle is made from turned ash and fitted to the blade with a brass ferrule. Made in Sheffield by George Barnsley & Sons.
