Ashley Iles Roughing-Out Gouge 1 1/2" is a classic pole lathe turning tool.
The main function of a roughing-out gouge is to do the initial rounding-up your billet (or blank). It is the first tool to use on a billet that has been roughly rounded by a drawknife and shavehorse.
A straight-forward and forgiving tool to use, with a handle length that is appropriate for pole lathe use.
Overall length 410mm (16 1/4") including a 9" beech handle.
Made from high carbon steel, the cutting edge is 32mm (1 1/4") from corner to corner. It has a relatively shallow sweep.
Comes with a basic hollow ground to 30 degrees so will need a final hone before use.
Only suitable for use on a pole lathe.
An alternative to this tool would be the Ashley Iles Carving Gouge 1 1/4 x 7.
Ashley Iles Roughing-Out Gouge 1 1/2" is included in the Woodsmith Pole Lathe Tool Set I.
