The Ashley Iles Carving Gouge Curved 2"x18 made in the UK.
Great for the rapid removal of wood deeper down in a large bowl. Also used in round wood timber framing and log buildings.
Whilst curved (or bent) carving gouges have a shoulder on them it is best not to bash them with a wooden mallet. The forces involved can do strange things to the structure of the steel, hand pressure is best.
Alongee pattern, i.e. blade tapers all the way from the shoulder to the cutting edge.
Cutting edge is 50mm (2") corner to corner, the bevel is ground to 25 degrees with a large no.18 sweep.
Total length 305mm (12"), beech handle 150mm (6") long.
Out-cannel (bevel on the outside) so sharpen with a bench stone and remove the burr carefully from the inside with a hard slipstone.
Ashley Iles Carving Gouge Curved 2"x18 comes sharp and ready to use.
